Story so far

In 2014, Tim & Rachel Hughes and a small team relocated from Holy Trinity Brompton in London, to launch a new church in the city centre of Birmingham.

We began with a small group of people gathering together mid-week in our home. As we grew in numbers, we began to meet on Sundays in a variety of venues including the Diocese offices, a solicitor’s boardroom and Jongleurs’ Comedy Club! We then moved into our present home; a renovated gas retort warehouse on Gas Street, just off Broad Street, and officially launched on Friday 5 February 2016.

When we first walked into the building that is now Gas Street Church we quickly discovered that it was once an industrial site for the purpose of manufacturing gas that was used to power street lamps across the city. God really spoke to us powerfully through the history of this building. The history of the building instantly provided us with a compelling narrative, a prophetic picture, of a church that would be light for the city & beyond.

“You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in our world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.”
— Matthew 5:14 (MSG)

Not just one central light; hundreds, even thousands, of lights all carrying the love and truth of the gospel into their everyday lives. We are a church that gathers and scatters. We gather on Sundays. We gather in Groups and Teams. We gather to worship, to pray, to open God’s word, to be filled again by the power of the Holy Spirit. We gather to grow as disciples. We gather to be community, to play our part, to be family. We gather to share stories, to stand with one another, and to spur each another on. We gather to create an environment where people from all walks of life can ‘come and see’.

And then we scatter, as light bearers, as peacemakers, as joy-bringers, as city-shapers, culture-setters, world-changers, as Jesus-followers.

Over the years we’ve had the joy to plant St Marks, Coventry with Phil & Rachel Atkinson, Hanzekerk, Nijmegen, Netherlands with Bjorn & Inge Visser and also Anchor Church, Birmingham with Chris Mitton.

Gather with us on the journey!

Love,

Tim & Rachel Hughes
